Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Australian War Memorial to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier on Tuesday 25 October 2011. This was The Queen's seventh visit to the Memorial.

The Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh walked through the Commemorative courtyard to the Hall of Memory, where The Queen laid a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier. The Royal party walked along the Roll of Honour to view the names of those Australians who have died during the Afghanistan conflict. The Queen met veterans and current serving defence personnel.

After the official part of the visit, The Queen talked to members of the public at the front of the building and accepted flowers from children. Once the Royal couple had left, many people, including children, gathered on the front steps before going into the Memorial.

In October 2011, the Australian War Memorial convened a major international conference on the Korean War. When communist North Korea invaded South Korea in June 1950, an American-led United Nations coalition drove the North Koreans back, which, in turn, brought China into the war. When an armistice was signed three years later, the border between the two Koreas was practically unchanged. Though the fighting was on a vast scale, particularly in 1950-51, the war was often called a ‘police action’. In fact, it was one of the most significant conflicts, politically and militarily, of the twentieth century.

The Australian War Memorial's Head of Research Dr Peter Pedersen talks about his new book ANZACS on the Western Front. ANZACs on the Western Front is the definitive guide to the Western Front battlefields. Meticulously researched and written by the Head of Research at the Australian War Memorial, Dr Peter Pedersen, this landmark publication guides readers chronologically through the battles in which Australians and New Zealanders fought on the Western Front from 1916-1918. Lavishly illustrated in vibrant colour, with fascinating images from the Memorial's archives as well as new panoramic location shots to provide an in situ perspective for the reader, each chapter covers the important tactical milestones passed along the way and explains how the Australian Imperial Force and the New Zealand Expeditionary Force evolved to meet the war's changing demands.

Peter Burness, Senior Historian, and concept leader in the Hall of Valour redevelopment project, explains the significance of the Hall of Valour, the qualities of those awarded the Victoria Cross and the definition of valour. The Hall of Valour honours the ninety-eight Australians who have received the Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery in time of war. Amid great battles and the movements of armies, the exploits of courageous individuals have always provided inspiration. The Hall of Valour recognises the deeds of ordinary Australians under the extraordinary conditions of war.
