The story of Australia's long war in Vietnam has now been completed with the release of the final volume of the Official History of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War, published by Allen and Unwin in association with the Australian War Memorial.

Written by Ashley Ekins with Ian McNeill, Fighting to the Finish: the Australian Army and the Vietnam War 1968--1975, tells the story of the soldiers' war, relating with empathy and insight their actions, their achievements, and their tragic losses during the peak period of Australian operations in Vietnam from the middle of 1968 to the end of 1971.

The Australian War Memorial's Head of Research Dr Peter Pedersen talks about his new book ANZACS on the Western Front. ANZACs on the Western Front is the definitive guide to the Western Front battlefields. Meticulously researched and written by the Head of Research at the Australian War Memorial, Dr Peter Pedersen, this landmark publication guides readers chronologically through the battles in which Australians and New Zealanders fought on the Western Front from 1916-1918. Lavishly illustrated in vibrant colour, with fascinating images from the Memorial's archives as well as new panoramic location shots to provide an in situ perspective for the reader, each chapter covers the important tactical milestones passed along the way and explains how the Australian Imperial Force and the New Zealand Expeditionary Force evolved to meet the war's changing demands.

Renowned Australian Artist eX de Medici at work as part of the Australian War Memorial's Perspective's Exhibition. I created an exhibition film to feature as part of the Perspectives exhibition. Perspectives presents the unique insights of two contemporary artists responding to the subject of peacekeeping. As official artists commissioned by the Australian War Memorial, Jon Cattapan travelled to Timor–Leste in July 2008 and eX de Medici went to the Solomon Islands in March 2009. Both artists gained insight into the role of Australian peacekeepers and from these experiences, created a series of works that reveal a personal vision and artistic style.

Nurses: from Zululand to Afghanistan

Watch

During his six months as a nursing officer with the Primary Health Care Team in Afghanistan in 2008, Roneel Chandra was regularly called on to assist with aero-medical evacuations. One night-time casualty retrieval did not go according to plan. Coming in to land in the dark, and with poor visibility owing to the dust, the US Black Hawk pilot misjudged the landing zone, and the helicopter rolled over. Chandra and the two American medics were pitched around in the back of the helicopter. Despite their own injuries, their "priority was to look for casualties, and we made sure that the two waiting soldiers were OK and stabilised ... People put a lot of trust in you, they rely on you to do the best job you can." Later that day, they were all airlifted safely to Tarin Kowt. Chandra, like the many Australian service nurses who have come before him, is motivated by a keen sense of loyalty to his mates.

Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Australian War Memorial to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier on Tuesday 25 October 2011. This was The Queen's seventh visit to the Memorial.

The Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh walked through the Commemorative courtyard to the Hall of Memory, where The Queen laid a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier. The Royal party walked along the Roll of Honour to view the names of those Australians who have died during the Afghanistan conflict. The Queen met veterans and current serving defence personnel.

After the official part of the visit, The Queen talked to members of the public at the front of the building and accepted flowers from children. Once the Royal couple had left, many people, including children, gathered on the front steps before going into the Memorial.
